The Pancake Review (2019)

Part of a larger multi-year project investigating the ad-hoc economies and temporary social structures that surround large-scale temporary events, The Pancake Review (2019) is the result of dedicated and embedded research undertaken during a self-directed research residency at the 2019 Calgary Stampede.

Over the course of the 10 day event, Owen attended 30 of the over 200 free pancake breakfasts hosted by community groups in Calgary during the stampede. Initially released as reviews on Instagram, Owen’s artist book detailing the results of this research, The Pancake Review, will be published in limited edition in early 2021. Containing the reviews and images documenting the breakfasts Owen attended, the publication also looks at the broader impact of the pancake breakfast as an economic and social form.

The initial reviews are available for viewing on Instagram under the hashtag #ThePancakeReview
